Fast Charging Standards: PD, QC and the Proprietary Ones

Fast charging is a negotiation. The charger and the device talk to each other, agree a voltage and current, and only then does power flow at speed. If they cannot agree, they fall back to plain 5V — and a 65W charger delivers about 10W, no faster than a decade-old one.
This is why buying "a 65W charger" is not enough. It has to be a 65W charger that speaks your phone's language.
The two open standards
USB Power Delivery (PD) is the one that matters most. It runs over USB-C, it is an industry standard rather than one company's, and it is what laptops, tablets, iPhones and most modern Android phones use. A PD charger negotiates a voltage from a defined set and can supply anything from a few watts to 240W.
PPS (Programmable Power Supply) is an extension of PD. Rather than jumping between fixed voltages, it adjusts in small steps, which lets the phone charge faster while staying cooler. Several manufacturers' fastest speeds require PPS specifically — a plain PD charger will work, just more slowly.
Quick Charge (QC) is Qualcomm's, common on Android phones with Snapdragon chips. QC 4 and later are compatible with PD; earlier versions are not, and used USB-A.
The proprietary ones
Several manufacturers run their own protocols — variously branded as VOOC, SuperVOOC, Dash, Warp, SuperCharge, Turbo Power and others. These often deliver the highest advertised numbers.
The trade-off is that they generally require the maker's own charger and frequently its own cable. Plug such a phone into a third-party PD charger and it will charge, but at the slower PD speed rather than the headline one. This is not a fault; it is how the protocol works.
If your phone advertises a very high charging speed under a brand name, assume that speed needs its own charger. Budget for keeping the original one rather than replacing it with a generic.
How to work out what you need
Three things to match
- Protocol. Find what your device supports — usually "USB PD", "PD 3.0 with PPS", or a brand name. The charger must list the same.
- Wattage. Match or exceed what your device can draw. Excess is harmless: the device only takes what it negotiates.
- Cable. Above 60W the cable must be rated for it. A cable that is not will limit the whole chain silently.

Multi-port chargers share, they do not multiply
A charger described as 65W with three ports does not give 65W to each. The total is shared, and the split changes as you plug things in — often reassigning power and briefly interrupting a device already charging.
Listings state the split in a table, usually as something like "C1 alone: 65W; C1+C2: 45W+18W". Read it before assuming a single charger can run a laptop and a phone at full speed simultaneously.
Safety, briefly
Fast charging pushes real power through a small object. Look for BIS certification for sale in India, and for stated protections — over-voltage, over-current, over-temperature and short-circuit. Very cheap unbranded chargers are the one category where saving a few hundred rupees is a genuinely poor trade.
