Choosing a USB-C Cable That Will Not Throttle Your Charging

USB-C is a connector shape, not a capability. Two cables with the same plugs at both ends can differ enormously, and the packaging is often the only place that says which is which — assuming it says at all.
The two things a cable decides
Power
A basic USB-C cable is rated for 3A at up to 20V — 60W. To carry more, the cable needs thicker conductors and an e-marker: a small chip inside the plug that tells the charger what the cable can safely handle.
- No e-marker → the charger limits to 60W regardless of what both ends could do
- 5A e-marker → up to 100W
- Newer ratings → up to 240W
So a 100W charger and a 100W laptop connected by an ordinary cable charge at 60W, with no warning anywhere. This is the single most common reason people conclude a charger is faulty.
Data
Data speed is completely independent of power rating, and here the range is extreme:

The great majority of USB-C cables sold are USB 2.0 for data, including expensive ones sold as fast-charging cables. A 100W cable can still be 480 Mbps. If you plug an external SSD into one, it will work and it will be twenty times slower than the drive.
Power rating and data speed are separate specifications
Never infer one from the other. A listing that advertises "100W fast charging" and says nothing about data is almost certainly USB 2.0. If you need both, the listing must state both.
Video, and why a cable can fail at it
Driving a monitor over USB-C needs DisplayPort Alternate Mode, which uses wires that charge-only cables may not connect at all. If a screen does not appear, the cable is the first thing to swap. Look for "supports DP Alt Mode" or a stated resolution such as 4K at 60Hz.
What to look for when buying
- A stated wattage. 60W, 100W or 240W. "Fast charging" with no number means 60W at best.
- A stated data speed in Gbps. If it says only "data transfer", assume 480 Mbps.
- Length. Resistance rises with length. For high-wattage charging or high-speed data, shorter is genuinely better — 1m is a good default, 2m for charging only.
- USB-IF certification where available. It means the cable was tested against the specification rather than merely described as meeting it.
- Strain relief at the plugs. Cables fail where they bend, almost always at the connector. A moulded or braided reinforcement there is worth more than the outer sleeve.
A practical habit
Once you own several, they become indistinguishable within a week. Label them — a small tag or a dot of paint near the plug, marking wattage and data speed. It takes two minutes and saves the recurring puzzle of a laptop that charges slowly for no apparent reason.
Keep at least one known-good high-wattage cable and one known-good high-speed data cable, and use the cheap bundled ones for earbuds and keyboards where neither matters.
