Monitor Specifications That Actually Matter

Monitor listings quote a dozen numbers. Three of them determine how the screen will feel to use; several of the rest are measured in ways that make comparison meaningless.
1. Panel type — the one with the biggest effect

For most people buying one monitor for everything, IPS is the right default. TN is a false economy unless you specifically need the speed.
2. Resolution, relative to size
Resolution alone means little; what matters is pixel density — pixels spread across a given diagonal.

The common mistake is a 27-inch 1080p monitor. It is cheap and the pixels are large enough to see, which makes text look soft at normal viewing distance.
3. Refresh rate
60Hz is standard. 75Hz costs almost nothing extra and is mildly nicer. 120Hz and above is a real, visible difference in motion — but only if something is producing that many frames.
- Office work and browsing: 60–75Hz is genuinely sufficient. Higher is pleasant, not transformative.
- Gaming: worth it, if your graphics card can drive it at the resolution you chose.
- Buying 144Hz with a card that manages 50fps spends money on capacity you cannot use.
The numbers to largely ignore
Contrast ratio. "Dynamic" contrast figures — 10,000,000:1 and similar — are produced by turning the backlight down in dark scenes. Static contrast is the meaningful number, and it is rarely quoted. Roughly: IPS around 1000:1, VA 2500–4000:1.
Response time. Quoted as 1ms almost universally, measured in a best case (grey-to-grey with overdrive) that does not reflect normal transitions. It is not comparable between manufacturers.
Peak brightness with HDR badges. Entry-level HDR certification can be met by panels that cannot display meaningful HDR. If HDR matters, look for a high sustained brightness figure and local dimming, not a logo.
The things people forget until the monitor arrives
- Stand adjustability. Many budget monitors tilt and nothing else. Height adjustment is the single biggest ergonomic factor — the top of the screen should sit near eye level. Check for VESA mounting if the stand is fixed, so an arm can be added later.
- Ports. Confirm the monitor's inputs match your machine's outputs, and that the required cable is included. HDMI versions differ in what resolution and refresh rate they carry.
- USB-C with power delivery — for a laptop, one cable for video, data and charging is a genuine daily convenience. Check the wattage it supplies.
- Coating. Matte diffuses reflections; glossy is more vivid but mirrors a window. In a bright Indian room, matte is usually the right call.
- Flicker-free and low blue light if you work long hours. Cheap monitors sometimes dim by rapidly switching the backlight, which some people perceive as eye strain.
A sensible default
27-inch, 2560×1440, IPS, 75Hz or higher, height-adjustable stand or VESA mount, matte finish. That covers work, browsing and casual gaming without paying for specifications that will not be used.
