ANC vs Passive Isolation: What Noise Cancelling Actually Does

Active noise cancelling is the headline feature on almost every pair of headphones above a certain price. It is genuinely impressive technology, and it is also routinely oversold — because what it removes is much narrower than the phrase "noise cancelling" suggests.
Two different jobs
Passive isolation is physical. An ear tip that seals your ear canal, or an earcup that presses against your head, simply blocks sound from getting in. No electronics involved.
Active noise cancelling (ANC) is electronic. Microphones on the outside listen to the incoming sound, and the earphone generates the inverse waveform so the two cancel each other out before they reach your eardrum.
The important consequence: cancellation requires the system to predict the incoming wave. That is easy for a sound that repeats, and nearly impossible for one that does not.
What ANC removes well, and what it does not

This matters a lot in an Indian city. Road noise here is dominated by horns, not engine drone. ANC will flatten the background rumble of a commute convincingly and do very little about the auto-rickshaw beside you. For that, the seal matters more than the electronics.
Which means the fit is doing most of the work
For higher frequencies — voices, horns, clatter — passive isolation is the only thing helping you. That comes down to:
- Ear tip size and material. A tip that does not seal leaks both noise in and bass out. Most people use tips that are too small because they are what came fitted. Try every size in the box; the correct one usually feels slightly larger than expected.
- In-ear vs open. Open-fit earbuds and most bone-conduction designs offer essentially no isolation, by design. That is the point of them, but it means no amount of ANC will rescue them in a noisy place.
- Over-ear vs in-ear. A well-sealed in-ear tip usually beats an average over-ear cup for isolation, though good over-ear designs with ANC remain the most effective combination.
The trade-offs nobody advertises
Battery. ANC typically costs 20–35% of runtime. If a pair claims 8 hours, expect closer to 5–6 with cancellation on.
Pressure sensation. Some people feel a mild ear-pressure or "underwater" effect with strong ANC. It is not harmful, but it can be uncomfortable over hours. If you are sensitive to pressure changes, look for a model with adjustable ANC strength.
Hiss. Cheaper implementations introduce a faint white-noise floor when nothing is playing. In a quiet room this can be more annoying than the noise it removed.
Transparency mode is the underrated feature. The same external microphones can pipe surroundings in, so you can hear announcements or traffic without removing the earbuds. On a road in India this is a safety feature, not a convenience one.
Do you actually need ANC?
- Yes, if you fly regularly, commute by train or metro, or work near constant machine noise
- Probably not, if your noise is people talking — spend the money on better fit and seal instead
- Check for transparency mode if you will wear them outdoors near traffic
If your priority is blocking voices in an office rather than drone on a flight, well-sealing in-ear monitors without ANC often outperform mid-range ANC models — and cost less.
